Every two years, on the sidelines of the ONS Strategic Conference, the MSC and ONS are bringing together 60–80 high-level participants from government, industry, the military, academia, and civil society at the ONS Summit to discuss these pressing energy security challenges, the geopolitics of the green transition, and pathways to align energy security, affordability, and sustainability.

Energy remains a core aspect of geopolitics and a central element of military and geoeconomic playbooks. The Iran war and the escalation around the Strait of Hormuz have sent shock waves through global energy markets and the world economy. Russia’s strikes on energy facilities in Ukraine have been devastating, and incidents of suspected Moscow-linked attacks on European energy infrastructure beyond Ukraine are rising.

Reflected in its “energy dominance agenda,” the US sees its status as fossil fuel power as a key foreign policy instrument. Meanwhile, China is building strategic leverage as the world’s leading “electrostate.” The heavy reliance on Chinese hardware and software across clean technologies as well as Beijing’s stronghold in critical mineral supply chains create entry points for weaponization. While the shift to renewables and reduced hydrocarbon dependencies provide climate, economic, and security gains, governments are struggling to address emerging security risks, upfront costs, and infrastructure demands of the energy transition.

The ONS Summit is part of the MSC’s Sustainability Program. With this program, the MSC aims to advance the debate at the intersections of governance, the environment, security, and prosperity. To that end, the MSC facilitates exchange between senior decision-makers and experts from different sectors.

For its sustainability activities, the MSC works with a large variety of partners from the private sector, international organizations, think tanks, and academia. For the ONS Summit 2026, the MSC and ONS are partnering with Siemens Energy.
